Think you may need your fuse board updating? Then you need to read this…
We were contacted by a customer needing advice on the fuse boards in their property.
The customer had contacted their electricity service provider to enquire about having a smart meter fitted, but were told that this would not be possible due to the 2 isolation points in their property being outdated, and that they would need to be modernised, creating just one point of isolation, before a smart meter could be installed.
On inspection, it appeared that originally their property had two seperate isolation points which fed a four core SWA to two seperate fuse boards.
The only way to correct this was for us to replace the two fuse boards within their property with just one fuse board and convert the four core SWA into three core, utilising the yellow core as the earth and the red and black cores as phase and neutral. We removed the blue core completely and this allowed us to create just one point of isolation at the service head. We rebuilt the main service head completely upgrading the meter tails and earth services with new connection points. We also replaced the old switched fuse isolator which supplied the garage and service head room with a separate consumer unit with its own protective individual circuits and future expansion points.
This rectified the problem and allowed the customer to go ahead and have their smart meter installed.
